If you have summoned this deck into your awareness, know that is not by chance or happenstance. It is because there is a world within you begging to be explored….calling you towards a greater self-knowing… luring you into the courageous acknowledgment of your own truth.
Psychologists call this mysterious world the subconscious or unconscious realm. Marketers call it the subliminal. Self-development teachers call it the shadow self. Witches call it the occult. Ancient humanity, since the dawn of time, has referred to this innermost, hidden place within the soul as the Underworld.
The Underworld is exactly that — the Self underneath all that can be seen by the light of awareness.
It holds the shadowy corners that are too shrouded in pain (like shame, guilt, and fear) to be gazed upon casually. So, instead of looking at the pain and facing what arrives, you look away. Maybe even pretend that it’s not there. You numb yourself from your own truth. You avoid your own darkness out of self-preservation, cowardice, or apathy and instead choose to cope with the mediocrity of knowing only a part of your soul.
And unfortunately for most, coping with mediocrity usually turns into the outward expression of toxic behavior like co-dependency, desperation, over-indulging, blaming others, holding grudges, addictions, and the inward feelings of depression, anxiety, mental unease, dread, hopelessness, and a sense of feeling abandoned by creation.
At some point, many who walk the path of self-avoidance will realize that a half-life is more painful than whatever pain they may be avoiding. The courage to venture into the Underworld arises out of inner frustration, and basically being sick of one’s own shit — one’s own cowardice.
This deck and guidebook are here to help you BEFORE you get to this “fed-up with yourself” point. This is your invitation — your portal — into the courage to face what you’ve been avoiding.
